Historian’s Report W.C.M.S. Alliance
September 2004 — May 2005

Much like last year’s historian’s report, this is a report of a few Past Presidents who are still carrying on with the aims of the Alliance (Auxiliary).
Our President, Darlene Henderson, has tried to step down as she has been President since 2000. Since we have no one to fill her shoes, she is still acting as our President. We presented Darlene with her Past Presidents’ pin at our Annual Past Presidents Luncheon last fall.
We still have a wonderful turn-out of Past Presidents at our Past Presidents Annual Luncheon when we all catch up on news and especially how proud we are of our grandchildren — so many of whom are doing so well at Universities here and there.

Some of the work still being carried on by our members
World Medical Relief—chairman Norma I Henderson:
Norma with the help of her husband Dr. Richard Henderson has collected 1260 lbs. of pharmaceuticals which were collected from physicians’ offices and delivered to W.M.R. Also delivered were one EKG machine, walkers, crutches, and one commode. During 2004 over 5000 prescriptions for low-income senior citizens were provided. Medical equipment such as hospital beds, wheel chairs, and walkers may be borrowed from World Medical Relief.
The dream of Mrs. Auberlin (1953) to collect and distribute re-cycled medical equipment
— supplies and medicine — continues today. Thousands of shipments of supplies have been sent to over 130 countries. Contributions, supplies, or money are always welcome.
A.M.A. Foundation — Sharing Card Chairman — Norma I Henderson:
As you see, Norma wears more than one hat!! A request for contributions to the A.M.A. Foundation was asked from members of the Alliance and readers of the Detroit Medical News (11/15/04). The names of contributors were listed in a holiday card in the Detroit Medical News. The holiday sharing card raised $2250.00 for A.M.A. Foundation which was sent to five Medical Schools.
The contributors were:
Dr. John and Anne Bielawski Dr. and Mrs. William H. Jevons
Dr. and Mrs. Gilbert Bluhm Pattie Klimchuck
Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Christensen Dr. Frank and Marge Lee
Dr. and Mrs. Jeffrey Clark Dr. and Mrs. Kim IC Lie
Dr. and Mrs. Allen Dabzyniak Dr. and Mrs. Amorm Manadee
Helen Ann Ermete (Mrs. Sait) Eleanor Marsh
Alice Berberian Haidostrian Dr. Gordon and Mildred Murray
Dr. Hugh and Darlene Henderson Rose Ruble
Dr. Richard and Norma Henderson Dr. Michael and Halina Yurkanin

Cathy Christensen our Treasurer reports that we have $78.08 in savings and $1004.48 in checking. There are 55 paid members.

Three hundred dollars was given to Helen Aim Ermete for Interim House.

Helen Ann Ermete — Chairman Health Projects:

Helen Ann Ermete has been involved with Interim House, a Detroit shelter (just celebrated 25 years) for abused women and children. This is part of the A.M.A. and Michigan State Alliance S.A.V.E. program (Stop America’s Violence Everywhere). We have been involved with the shelter for 12 years. The shelter houses up to 60 people and is always at top capacity. They stay there up to six or eight weeks and are then moved to a Safe House or out of the area to relatives who are not known to the abuser.
Essential foods such as bread, eggs, sandwich meats, and hot. dogs (beef) are provided twice a month. All the holidays are remembered with spiral cut hams, fresh salad, vegetables, applesauce in large jars, candies for the children at Valentine’s and Easter, and gifts wrapped and labeled for boy or girl at Christmas. As well as food, paper goods, toilet rolls, baby diapers, and clean gently used clothing, shoes, boots, and bed linens are collected and delivered on a constant basis.
The things we do for the women and children at Interim House are to help build a little confidence in the lives of those who have been beaten down by blows and words for years.
Alice Haidostian — Fund Raising for the Detroit Science Center:
Alice Haidostian has had a long interest (over 25 years) and many years of effort in Fund Raising for the Detroit Science Center. Our T.A.M. (Transparent Anatomical Mannequin), which Alice was instrumental in procuring, is repaired and operational again in her display area.
Dr. Weiss of the W.C.M.S. has been doing some of the leg work for Alice at the Science Center. Donations to the Center are always welcome and appreciated, and Alice will be happy to pass them on.
This year we met four times, and although we are now so few, we are tying in our individual way to keep the purpose of the Alliance alive — to help community services and to cooperate with the medical profession in the solution of the problems hanging over the medical profession.
Our Nell Rhoades, in honoring her late husband Dr. Dusty (Francis) Rhoades, has been sponsoring wonderful lectures on the problems of medicine. and the medical profession — insurance repayment, etc. etc. These lectures are very well done with speakers who are knowledgeable. Watch for the next lecture and attend. Nell has always been one of our staunchest supporters, and she does it with such grace.
— A Past President (1954-55) Irene Weed, passed away this year. She was a member for over 60 years. Irene was also a Past President of Michigan State Auxiliary.
We are a small group, but our history goes back to 1927 and in all these years we have been involved in so many projects in Wayne County. The memories .of those who have passed on — Betty Gerisch, Roxie Weston, Pattie Merritt — and so many who have left their mark. We can still hold our heads up —hurrah for us!!!..
If I have forgotten to mention something or someone, I apologize sincerely.

Helen Ann Ermete, Historian
