Our Story

Founded in 1849 by physicians in Detroit, the Wayne County Medical Society of Southeast Michigan is one of the largest and most active county medical societies in Michigan.

The Society provides a wide range of member services, including Detroit Medical News, its quarterly newsletter and monthly e-edition. These publications highlight WCMSSM activities, welcome new members, and share updates on services, legislation, medical news, historical perspectives, and current issues affecting the profession.

WCMSSM serves as a strong advocate for physicians across the state, addressing issues that shape the future of medicine and protect physicians’ rights. Through legislative, public health, and business initiatives, the Society advances the interests of both physicians and patients while promoting the core values and ethical standards of the medical profession. It also offers opportunities for professional connections, civic engagement, and open dialogue.

At its core, WCMSSM is a diverse community of physicians—men and women of all backgrounds—committed to excellence in their field and to strengthening the profession for future generations.

The Wayne County Medical Society Foundation, established in 1987, supports charitable, scientific, literary, and educational initiatives. Through the Foundation, WCMS contributes to community outreach and professional development programs, including the Charles C. Vincent, MD Memorial Scholarship, the Beaumont Lectureship, and the Francis P. Rhoades, MD Memorial Lectureship. These efforts further the Society’s mission to educate physicians and improve the care they provide to patients.
